Abstract:

Abstract: Objective: This study investigated pre-attentive processing characteristics of Taekwondo athletes’ visual search under dynamic threat. Methods: By using the expert-novice paradigm, event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured to investigate the P1 and N1 components of early visual processing stages of Taekwondo athletes and regular undergraduate students who were not involved in Taekwondo (n=15 for each group). Results: 1)The behavioral results indicated that expert athletes showed a more rapid and efficient visual search for dynamic threat stimuli. In addition, ERPs showed that the expert group evoked greater P1 latency and amplitude and N1 amplitude during the early visual processing stages. 2)compared with static threat stimuli, dynamic threat stimuli evoked longer P1 and N1 latencies in the cerebral cortex. Conclusions: These results indicate that Taekwondo athletes devote more attentional resources during the early visual-processing stages, manifesting faster attentional orienting to dynamic-threat stimuli. These stimuli influence the early visual-processing stages of Taekwondo athletes by increasing interfering information
