|
Abstract:
Abstract: In order to explore the effect of overall self-esteem and self-compassion on physical exercise motivation of college students, this study investigated 433 college students by Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES), Ryan's measuring physical activity motivation-revised (MPAM-R) and Neff's self-compassion scale (SCS). Results: The overall self-esteem, self-compassion and physical exercise motivation significantly positively correlated with each other (P < 0.01). Regression analysis indicated that the effects of overall self-esteem on self-compassion and physical exercise motivation were significant (P < 0.001), and they explained 15% and 8% of the variance respectively. On the basis of overall self-esteem, the regression effect of self-compassion on physical exercise motivation was significant, and the self-compassion had a partly mediating effect in overall self-esteem explaining physical exercise motivation, and it explained 38.26% of total effect. Conclusions: To improve the overall self-esteem, self compassion and other psychological characteristics are the effective strategies to stimulate college students' exercise motivation; self-compassion is one intermediary variable of the overall self-esteem influencing physical exercise motivation. These conclusions provide important practical implications for formulating college students' physical exercise motivation incentive decision
