Abstract:

Abstract: By probing the mutual relationship between translator’s identity and translator’s ethics with the historical development, the present essay discusses the external representation and internal reasons of translator's ethic reflection in the evolving process of translator’s identity. The translator's appellation and subjectivity constitute the external representations of the translator’s ethics, and the text selection, translation theory, translation methods, translation principles and translation strategies are the internal reasons. At the Philology Age, translators were recognized as “servants,” who were required to be faithful to their “masters,” that is, the original works and the rulers. Such is the reflection of the servility ethics. At the stage of Linguistics, translators attached more importance to “how to be faithful,” with their identities being regarded as “female.” Women’s ethics has been the dominant ethics which the translators followed. And in Deconstruction period, translation studies turn to such ethical issues as “creative treasurers” and “blendlinge,” in which the translator finally becomes the subject, hence manifesting his professional ethics as a translator
