Abstract:

γ-Fe2O3 oleic acid-coated magnetic nanoparticles were prepared by adding oleic acid as a surfactant in the process of synthesizing γ-Fe2O3-based nanoparticles with the CIT (chemically-induced transition) method and FeCl2 solution as the treatment solution. The morphology, magnetization properties, crystal structure and the chemical compositions of the prepared nanoparticles were characterized and analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), high resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The experimental results showed that the nanoparticles prepared were essentially single sphere-shaped crystals, that oleic acid contributed to the epitaxial growth of the nanoparticles, and that when oleic acid was added in sufficient amount, it could completely replace FeCl3·6H2O
