Peeled or unpeeled branches of Salix discolor were employed to produce medium density fiberboard (MDF) bon??ded with soybean protein adhesive. The ratio of bark to xylem of branches and fiber pulp yield and explored. The effects of bark and adhesive contents and board density on the physical and mechanical properties of S. discolor MDF were studied. The processing parameters in MDF manufacturing were optimized, and the properties of S. discolor MDF bonded with soybean protein adhesive were compared with those of peeled S. discolor MDF bonded with urea??formaldehyde (UF) adhesive. The results showed that the bark content was 30.5% for unpeeled S. discolor branches, which contributed to an approximate 4% drop of fiber pulp yield compared with that of peeled ones. The performance of MDF improved significantly with the increasing of board density and adhesive consumption. The properties of MDF made of unpeeled branches fiber were better than those made of peeled branches fiber. The physical and mechanical properties of MDF made of unpeeled branches fiber could meet the technical requirements of GB/T 11718―2009 when the density was 0.80 g/cm3 and the adhesive consumption was 16%. Meanwhile, MDF made of peeled branches could meet the requirements of national standard with a density and adhesive consumption as low as 0.75 g/cm3 and 14%, respectively. Although inferior to UF adhesive, soybean protein adhesive proved to be qualified in MDF manufacturing with respect to national standard
