Abstract:

Abstract:The death of Prince Xiao Tong narrated in the Liang Shu (Book of Liang) is a brief story and it is expanded with two pieces of anecdote, namely “rowing a barge while gathering lotus” and “burying a goose to suppress evil” in the Nan Shi (History of the Southern Dynasties). The validity of the two anecdotes had been challenged ever since until the compilation of Zi Zhi Tong Jian (History as a Mirror), in which the anecdotes were examined and rewritten by Sima Guang, thus forming a historical narration of verdict and making a profound influence on later ages. After nearly a thousand years, it’s not easy to authenticate the anecdotes, while the resources of which the historians made use could be subtly observed if we carefully refer to the culture and literature of the Southern Dynasties. This dissertation intends to start with investigating the prevalence and innovation of the two imageries or motif, “boat-rowing” and “lotus-gathering” in the Southern Dynasties, especially in the palace-style literature of the Liang Dynasty. Based on this, the relation between history and literature could be uncovered by inspecting the intertextuality of historical text and Confucian canons as well as literary classics. This effort will make it possible to explore the mind of historians hidden behind the historical memory.
