Abstract:

thefamilyoflemnaceae,commonlycalledduckweed,comprisefivegeneraand37speciesofaquaticmonocotyledonousplantsthatareendemictolakes,pondsandbrackishwaterbodiesonmostcontinents.theyareangiospermsthathavethehighestbiomassproductionrateandhavebeenusedtoremediatewastewaterfrombothmunicipalandindustrialsources.withtheseattractivefeatures,duckweedispoisedtobeanovelagriculturalplatformthatcancomplementcurrentterrestrialcrops.inaddition,theirremarkableabilitytoadapttodiverseclimatesandconditionsmayprovidenewunderstandingofstresstoleranceandgenomeadaptabilitymechanisms.however,oneofthefirstchallengesfacingtheseapplicationsistoestablishreliableandrapidmethodsforidentificationofcloselyrelatedstrainsthatmayhaveverydifferentbehaviourorproperties.thisreviewarticlesummarizesthestateoftheartsforthisendeavourandprovidestheoutlookforthisquestinthenearfuture.
