Abstract:

fingerlingsofafricancatfish,clariasgariepinus[meantotallength,(7.0±1.0)cmsd;meanweight,(3.0±0.7)gsd]wereexposedtoacuteconcentrationsofaminesaltof2,4-d(0,50,200,250,350,and400mg/l)todeterminethebehaviouralresponsesandmortality.whenraisedinaquariathefishbecamehyperactive.thebeatfrequencies(opercularandtailbeatfrequencyperminute,obfandtbf)oftheexposedfishdeclinedwithincreaseintheexposuredurationandconcentration,butthereversewasthecasewithpercentmortality.thesevariablessignificantlydifferedatboththeexposuredurationandconcentrationofthetoxicant(p<0.05).anovaofthelinearregressionbetweenvariables-obf,tbfandmortalityonexposuredurationindicatedastrongpositiverelationship(p<0.001)withtheentirevariablesexceptmortalityandexposureduration.obfandtbfwereinverselycorrelatedwithexposureduration(r=-0.99;p<0.05).the96hlethalconcentrationwas165.36(133.29~190.51,c.l.)mg/landthemedianlethaltimeatthehighestconcentrationwas20.41(11.87~27.46)h.theresultsfromthisstudyrevealedthat2,4-dwasverytoxictoc.gariepinusunderlaboratoryconditionsanditsapplicationshouldtherefore,berestrictedinthefield.fig3,tab3,ref45
