changingperspectivesonbiodiversityconservation:fromspeciesprotec-tiontoregionalsustainabilityKeywords: biodiversity,conservationbiology,landscapeecology,sustainabilityscience Abstract: ?biodiversityisthebasisforecosystemgoodsandservicesthatprovideforhumansurvivalandprosperity.witharapidlyincreasinghumanpopulationanditsdemandsfornaturalresources,landscapesarebeingfragmented,habitatsarebeingdestroyed,andbiodiversityisdeclining.howcanbiodiversitybeeffectivelyconservedinthefaceofincreasinghumanpressures?inthispaper,ireviewchangingperspectivesonbiodiversityconservation,anddiscusstheirrelevancetothepracticeofbiodiversityconservation.themajorpointsinclude:thenotionofbalanceofnatureisamythratherthanascientificconcept;thetheoryofislandbiogeographyisusefulheuristicallybutflawedpractically;theslossdebateisintriguingintheorybutir-relevantinreality;theconceptofminimumviablepopulationandpopulationviabilityanalysisareuseful,buttechnicallyinefficientandconceptuallyinadequate;metapopulationtheoryismathematicallyelegantbutecologicallyoversimplistic;andintegrativeperspectivesandapproachesforbiodiversityconservationareneededthatincorporateinsightsfromlandscapeecologyandsustainabilityscience.ifurtherdiscusssomekeyprinciplesforregionalconservationplanning,andarguethatthelong-termsuccessofbiodiversitycon-servationinanyregionwillultimatelydependontheeconomicandsocialsustainabilityofthatregion.bothresearchandpracticeinbiodiversityconservation,therefore,needtoadoptabroaderperspectiveofsustain-ability
