MongoliaislocatedwithintheCentralAsianOrogenicBelt.Thebeltisconsistofnumeroustectonicblocksorterranes,whichresultedfromcollisionsduringtheEarlyPaleozoic(Caledonianorogeny),LatePaleozoic(Hercynianorogeny)andpartlyinEarlyMesozoic(Indosinianorogeny)(Seng?retal.,1993;Heubeck,2001;Badarchetal.,2003).Thesecollisionshadaprofoundeffectonthecoal-bearingsedimentarybasinsinCarboniferous,Permian,JurassicandCretaceousperiodsofMongolia.Atotalofmorethan200coaloccurrencesanddepositsareknown,ofwhichabout70havebeenexplored.
