OriginalArticles--------------------------------------------------------------------------------PaleoecologyofOligocarpiagothaniiHallefromtheMiddlePermianofSoutheasternShanxi,NorthChina, PP. 1063-1075 Keywords: palaeoecology,planttaphonomy,middlePermian,OligocarpiagothaniiHalle Abstract: FossilfernsareabundantanddiverseinthePermianCathaysianFloraofShanxi,NorthChina.AlthoughplantsassemblagesoftheCarboniferousandPermianhavebeenextensivelyinvestigated,theirpalaeoecologyandespeciallythepaleoecologyoffernshasnotbeenstudiedindetail.RecentreinvestigationofOligocarpiagothaniihasrevealeditsgrowthhabitandcloningreproductionstrategy,butmostpreviousstudieslackintegratedsedimentologicalandtaphonomicdata.Inthisstudy,newmaterialsofO.gothaniihavebeencollectedfromafloodplainsettinginthemiddlePermianLowerShihhotseFormationofsoutheasternShanxi.Theseplantfossilswerefoundinalenticularclaystoneassociatedwithrootingstructures.Theyarecharacterizedbyaphlebiaatthebaseofthepenultimaterachis.Sedimentological,taphonomicandmorphologicalanalyseswereconductedtounderstandthegrowthhabitandecologyofthefern.TheresultindicatesthattheOligocarpiagothaniihadaprostrate,groundcovergrowthhabit,andwasdominantinpioneerflorasthatcolonizeddisturbedfloodplains.
