QualityControlof1-Alkyl-3-methylimidazoliumIonicLiquidPrecursorswithHPLCKeywords: 1-methylimidazole,purity,ionicliquid,precursor,HPLC Abstract: Ahighperformanceliquidchromatography(HPLC)methodwasproposedtomonitorthesynthesisandpurificationofthe1-alkyl-3-methylimidazoliumionicliquidprecursorsfromalkylationof1-methylimidazolewithalkylhalidesanddeterminethepurityoffinalproducts.Theresultsshowedthatseparationof1-methylimidazolefromtheprecursorscouldbeobtainedundertheHPLCperformanceconditionssuchascationexchangecolumn,acetonitrile/KH2PO4aqueoussolutionand209nmwavelength.Thecontentofunreacted1-methylimidazoleintheprecursorscouldbeeasilycalculatedfromtheircorrespondingHPLCpeakareaswiththecalibrationcurveof1-methylimidazole.Theretentiontimesofthe1-alkyl-3-methylimidazoliumionicliquidprecursorsdecreasedwiththeirincreasingalkyls,andtheionicliquidswiththesamecationanddifferentanionshadalmostthesameretentiontimes.
