Abstract:

ThechanceofanInterplanetaryCoronalMassEjection(ICME)observedbywidely-separatedspacecraftisrare.However,suchaneventprovidesusagoodopportunitytostudythepropagationandevolutionofICMEsintheheliosphere.Onday72of1975,anICMEwasobservedbyHelios1at0.3AU,whileasimilarsolarwindstructurewasobservedbyIMP8atEarthonday70of1975.OnthebasisofcomparisonoftheplasmasignaturesandthetransittimefromHelios1toIMP8,wehypothesizetheobservedICMEsbybothspacecraftareresultedfromthesameactiveregiononthesolarsurface.Aone-dimensionalMHDmodelwasusedtotracktheICMEfromHelios1(0.3AU)toEarth.TheobservedplasmaprofilesandtimingareclosetothosepredictedbyourMHDmodelandthus,givethesupportstothemodel.
