Abstract:

Mostlyfedwithgrassinfreshorconservedform,cattleandotherlivestockhavetocopewithsilicatedefencebodiesfromplants(phytoliths)andenvironmentalsilicates(grit),whichabradetoothenamelandcouldadditionallyinteractwithvarioussalivaryproteins.Todetectpotentialcandidatesforsilicate-bindingproteins,bovinewholesalivawasincubatedwithgrass-derivedphytolithsandsilicates.Interactionsofsalivaryproteinswithpulverizedbovinedentalenamelanddentinewereadditionallyanalysed.Afterintensewashing,thepowderfractionswereloadedonto1D-polyacrylamidegels,mostprominentadhesiveproteinbandswerecutoutandproteinswereidentifiedbymassspectrometrywithinthreeindependentreplicates.Allmaterialsweremainlyboundbybovineodorant-bindingprotein,bovinesalivaryprotein30×103andcarbonicanhydraseVI.Thephytolith/silicatefractionshowedadditionalstrongerinteractionwithhaemoglobinβandlactoperoxidase.Conceivably,thebindingoftheseproteinstothesurfacesmaycontributetobiologicalprocessesoccurringonthem.
