Influenceofdominancerankandaffiliationrelationshipsonself-directedbehaviorinfemaleTibetanmacaques(Macacathibetana)DOI: 10.11813/j.issn.0254-5853.2014.3.214, PP. 214-221 Keywords: Tibetanmacaques(Macacathibetana),Female,Self-directedbehavior(SDB),DominanceRank,Affiliationrelationship Abstract: Self-directedbehavior(SDB)ischaracterizedasanindicatorofanxiety,frustrationandstressinnonhumanprimates.Inthisstudy,wecollectedself-directedbehaviordatafromonegroupoffree-rangingTibetanmacaques(Macacathibetana)atMt.Huangshan,China(September2012–May2013)usingacombinationofbehavioralsamplingmethodsincludingfocalanimalsampling,behavioralsampling,continuoussamplingandinstantaneoussampling.Ourresultsshowedthatfemalesengagedinsignificantlyhigherratesofself-directedbehaviorwhentheywereinproximitytodominantindividualscomparedtosubordinateones.ConflictloserssignificantlyincreasedtheirSDBratesafteragonisticepisodes,indicatingthatSDBmightalsoserveasanindexofanxietyinM.thibetana.WefurtherfoundthatfemalessignificantlyincreasedtheirSDBrateswhenfocalindividualwasproximitytoweaklyaffiliationrelationshiphigherrankmembersthantostronglyaffiliationrelationshiphigherrankmembers.Ifconflictswerenotreconciled,thepostconflictSDBratesofloserswerehigherwhentheystayedwithstronglyaffiliationopponents;ifconflictswerereconciled,victimsofstronglyaffiliationrelationshipsopponentsengagedinmoreSDBratesbeforereconciliationthanafterreconciliation,whilevictimsofmoderatelyaffiliationrelationshipsopponentsdidnotengagedinmoreSDBratesbeforereconciliationthanafterreconciliation.WeconcludethatbothofdominancerankandaffiliationrelationshipsmightbothinfluencetheSDBratesoffemaleTibetanmacaquessignificantly,suggestingthatSDBisnotonlyanindexofanxietyinTibetanmacaques,butalsocanprovideanewinsightintoevaluationofsocialrelationshipsbetweenindividuals.
