Abstract:
?TheactivityofLewis(Nb2O5)andBr?nsted(Amberlyst70)acidcatalystsforthecyclodehydrationofxylosetofurfuralwasstudied.Thenatureoftheacidityresultedinsignificantchangesinthereactionmechanism.Lewisacidsitespromotetheformationofxylulose,whileBr?nstedacidsitesarerequiredtofurtherdehydratethesugartofurfural.Amberlyst70inwater/tolueneat175℃showedloweractivitybutgaveahigherfurfuralyield.UsingN2asthestrippingagentconsiderablyimprovedthefurfuralyieldandproductpurityinthestrippedstream.Catalyststabilitywasalsostudied.
