Abstract:

?AnanocompositeUV-visiblelight-responsivemultiwalledcarbonnanotube(MWCNT)/titaniumdioxide(TiO2)nanophotocatalystwassuccessfullysynthesizedbyamodifiedsol-gelmethodusingtitaniumisopropoxideandfunctionalizedMWCNTsasthestartingprecursors.ThephotocatalyticactivityoftheTiO2andthenanohybridmaterialwasinvestigatedthroughthephotodegradationofReactiveBlack5dyeunderultravioletlightirradiation.X-raydiffractionanalysisindicatedthatanatasephasewasobtainedforboththepureTiO2andtheMWCNT/TiO2composite,whileRamanspectroscopyconfirmedthepresenceofMWCNTsinthecomposite.FieldemissionscanningelectronmicroscopyrevealedthatTiO2nanoparticleswithanindividualdiameterofabout10-20nmwerecoatedonthesurfaceoftheMWCNTs.Thespecificsurfaceareasofthesampleswerefoundtobe80and181m2/gforthepureTiO2andMWCNT/TiO2,respectively.Asaresult,MWCNT/TiO2showedbetterphotocatalyticperformancethanpureTiO2becausethehighsurfaceareaofMWCNTsenabledthemtofunctionasgoodelectronacceptorsfortheretardationofelectron-holepairrecombination.
