Abstract:
?ThisminireviewsummarizesourrecentfindingsonthephotoactivityofS-dopednanoporouscarbons.Thematerialswereeithersynthesizedfromthesulfur-containingpolymersorobtainedbyheattreatmentofcommercialcarbonwithhydrogensulfide.Theirsurfacewasextensivelycharacterizedfromthepointsofviewofitssurfacechemistry,porosity,morphology,andelectronicproperties.Thecarbonsshowedenhancedactivitytowardsoxidationofarsineandremovalofdibenzothiophenesfrommodeldieselfuel.ThelatterwereoxidizedtovariousoxygencontainingintermediatesandthecleavageofC-CbondsinaromaticringwasdetectedwhencarbonwithadsorbedspecieswasexposedtoUVorvisiblelight.Irradiationresultedingenerationofphotocurrentinabroadrangeofwavelength.Thepresenceofsulfurledtothereductionofoxygenandcontributedtoanincreasedcapacitiveperformance.Welinktheseeffectstothepresenceofreducedsulfurinthesmallporeswhichenhancesthedispersiveinteractionsviainducingapositivechargetocarbonatoms,tosulfurinoxygenatedformswhichcontributetoFaradaicreactionsandincreasethepolarinteractions,andtothehydrophobicityofasurfaceinsmallporeswhereoxygencanbereducedbyexcitedelectronsfromchromophoric-likesulfurcontaininggroups.
