Abstract:

?Sulfonicacid-functionalizedheterogeneouscatalystshavebeenevaluatedinthecatalyticdehydrationofC6monosaccharidesinto5-hydroxymethylfurfural(HMF)usingdimethylsulfoxide(DMSO)assolvent.SulfoniccommercialresinAmberlyst-70wasthemostactivecatalyst,whichwasascribedtoitshigherconcentrationofsulfonicacidsitesascomparedwiththeothercatalysts,anditgave93mol%yieldofHMFfromfructosein1h.Withglucoseasthestartingmaterial,whichisamuchmoredifficultreaction,thereactionconditions(time,temperature,andcatalystloading)wereoptimizedforAmberlyst-70byaresponsesurfacemethodology,whichgaveamaximumHMFyieldof33mol%at147℃with23wt%catalystloadingbasedonglucoseand24hreactiontime.DMSOpromotesthedehydrationofglucoseintoanhydroglucose,whichactsasareservoirofthesubstratetofacilitatetheproductionofHMFbyreducingsidereactions.Catalystreusewithoutaregenerationtreatmentshowedagradualbutnotverysignificantdecayincatalyticactivity.
