Abstract:

?Tritylchloride(Ph3CCl)efficientlycatalyzesthecondensationof3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5(4H)-oneandaromaticaldehydesundermildandsolvent-freeconditions,affording4,4'-(arylmethylene)-bis(3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-ol)sinhightoexcellentyieldsandinshortreactiontime.Thepresenceoftherequisiteorganocatalytictritylcarbocation(Ph3C+)specieswasconfirmedbyanalysisofinfrared,1HNMR,andultravioletspectraldata.Aplausiblemechanismwasproposedforthereactionbasedontheobservationsandliteratureprecedent.
