Abstract:

?Weconsidertheproblemofinitializingthetrackingfilterofatargetmovingwithnearlyconstantvelocitywhenposition-only(1D,2D,or3D)measurementsareavailable.ItisknownthattheKalmanfilterisoptimalforsuchaproblem,provideditiscorrectlyinitialized.Wecompareasingle-pointandthewell-knowntwo-pointdifferencetrackinitializationalgorithms.Weanalyticallyshowthatiftheprocessnoiseapproacheszeroandthemaximumspeedofatargetusedtoinitializethevelocityvarianceapproachesinfinity,thenthesingle-pointalgorithmreducestothetwo-pointdifferencealgorithm.Wepresentnumericalresultsthatshowthatthesingle-pointalgorithmperformsconsistentlybetterthanthetwo-pointdifferencealgorithminthemeansquareerrorsense.Wealsopresentanalyticalresultsthatsupporttheconjecturethatthisistrueingeneral.
