Abstract:

From a perspective that considers the dynamics of social life and cultural production of individuals and societies as something inherent to archaeological theory (and anthropological), it will be our intention, as a starting point to further discussion, to rethink the relationship between archaeologists and communities living near the archaeological sites. It is our aim then to contribute to the incorporation into archaeological practice not only of this problem but also of its own problems and the everyday life of communities. In this regard, we discuss the conflicts happened in the town of Juella, province of Jujuy, Argentina, where archaeological research is taking place. The main issues discussed here will be the cultural heritage and the different processes of representation and appropriation that take place within the communities in a context of globalization and the emergence of transnational identities. From our position as students, rather than respond, our proposal involves questioning what we consider is missing in our education. In University, do we teach how to work with communities? How far it is possible to teach this? What is the role of communities that live near the sites and how do they participate in the archaeological practice? What role is to archaeologists and anthropologists to encourage this participation?
