Twenty-five years on: still working toward a theory of conservation? Venticinque anni dopo: ancora “Verso una teoria della conservazione”?

During the 1980s conservation was still based on the scientific experimentation of the 1800s and only became operationally efficient in the 1960s. It has been interpreted and described in several ways, such as pure-conservative, a term which was first used at the beginning of 1971. However, conservation without the adjectival prefixes and resisting any form of retrospection has continued to advance both in laboratories and on archaeological sites, becoming more defined, elaborate and even authoritative in the aftermath of natural disasters. Nevertheless, it has had difficulty in being consid-ered within the traditional theories and practices of restoration; it is only recently that it has become an advantageous association. This is due to the fact that on the one hand, there has been growing awareness regarding the necessity of using conserva-tive intervention in the strict sense of the word and on the other it is evident that this intervention must be carried out in conjunction with other measures of an inhibitory and contrasting nature, using architectural instruments when faced with possibly inevitable deterioration. The result is a fruitful convergence between conservation and critical restoration in terms of a critical-conservative(or vice-versa) approach. Riassunto La posizione conservativa, negli anni Ottanta del ‘900, discendeva da esperimen-tazioni scientifiche, ottocentesche e seriori, finalmente resesi via via efficaci a par-tite dagli anni Sessanta. Essa ha avuto varie interpretazioni, quale quella c.d. puro-conservativa, affermatasi a decorrere dal 1971. Ma la conservazione senza aggettivi, invece, opponendosi a qualsiasi pulsione ripristinatoria, ha continuato a procedere vuoi nei laboratori, vuoi nei cantieri, affinandosi, anche cimentandosi con gli effetti di calamità naturali. Essa, nei suoi rivolgimenti potenziali, rispetto alla surroga, è sta-ta a fatica considerata in seno alle teorie tradizionali del restauro e alla sua prassi. Soltanto di recente e a gradi, si è verificato un siffatto, fecondo accostamento. Ove, da una parte, si è assunta consapevolezza circa l’esigenza di operare con interventi conservativi in senso stretto; ma, dall’altra, si è compreso come, a tali azioni, ne va-dano accompagnate altre, inibitorie e di contrasto, con mezzi anche architettonici, nei confronti di un possibile deterioramento incombente. Con ciò, si è realizzata la feconda confluenza tra la conservazione e il restauro critico, nei termini di un approccio critico-conservativo, o viceversa.
