Abstract:

Quartz, a mineral widely found in the earth s crust, has applications in industry, geology and archeology. This mineral, formed by the SiO4 tetrahedron, contains channels along the c-axis, which, by allowing the entry of dopants, can induce effects that alter the hardness and color of the material, among other characteristics. The aim of this paper was to study the two varieties of natural quartz (alpha and sulfurous quartz) through spectroscopic techniques. Although the chemical analyses did not reveal the existence of a sulfur dopant, we can deduce that it is contained in the channels along the c-axis, through characteristic odors detected during the pulverization of the sulfurous quartz sample and analyses of its FT-IR spectra.
