Current Status and Future Potential of Neural Networks Used for Medical Image Processing

This paper aims to present a review of artificial neural networks (ANN) used in medical image processing. Instead of trying to cover all the issues and research aspects of ANNs in medical image processing, we focus our discussion on three major topics: medical image preprocessing (i.e.de-noising and enhancement), medical image segmentation, and medical image object detection and recognition. Main advantages and drawbacks of the methods are mentioned. Problematic issues of applying neural network for medical image processing and an outlook for the future research are also discussed. By this survey, we try to answer what the major strengths and weakness of applying neural networks for medical image processing would be. We believe that this would be very helpful for researchers who are involved in medical image processing with neural network techniques
