Rosario Ferré s The House on the Lagoon is a multithreaded version of Puerto Rico s twentieth-century history that hinges on the tension between the central discourse of the female narrator and her husband s marginal annotations and corrections. This technique deliberately calls into question who gets to write history, what gets included, and where the boundaries between fact and fiction lie. Through the theoretical frameworks of feminist historicism and the Latin American New Historical Novel, this article examines the uneasy relationship between historical veracity, authority, and gender as it is played out in Ferré s novel and the Puerto Rican society it portrays.
