A Study of University Faculty’s Participation in OpenCourseWare: From the Perspective of the Concerns-Based Adoption Model

Abstract:

This study explored faculty participation in OpenCourseWare (OCW) in the National Taiwan Normal University. Employing the concern-based adoption model and semi-structured interviewing, this study analyzed the concerns and use of eleven faculty members who had participated in the OCW program. The findings showed that the instructors participated mainly to share courses with the general public and to improve student learning. As to which courses were suitable for OCW, instructors considered the appropriateness of a course for video recording, whether it was of value and interest to the general public, and whether the course was well prepared for the open nature of OCW. The participating instructors adjusted themselves as well as the course content to better accommodate the OCW production and to foster student learning. Expectations for the OCW project included better incentives for participation, improving the recording and production quality, conducting user surveys, and more experience sharing opportunities among OCW participants.
