Role of Non-Polioviruses in Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP)DOI: 10.6051/j.issn.2224-3992.2012.02.045 Keywords: Acute flaccid paralysis , Non-Polio Enteroviruseses , RT-PCR , Cell Culture Abstract: Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) is a complex syndrome causedby different infectious and non-infectious agents, mostly byEnteroviruseses. Mass vaccination against Polioviruses withOral Poliovirus Vaccine (OPV), under the supervision of WorldHealth Organization (WHO) has endeavored to eradicate AFPand Poliomyelitis caused by Poliovirus. Although Poliovirus hasbeen eradicated in most countries, the societies have not releasedof AFP outbreaks, yet. Most researches emphasis on Non-PolioEnteroviruseses (NPEV) as main isolates in AFP affected patients.Because the traditional methods of cell culture and neutralizationused in corresponding laboratories cannot detect some of the agents,it is recommended to use more sensitive diagnostic methods, suchas Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR), forincreasing the rate of isolation.
