Solid waste, the ‘Throw-Away’ culture and livelihoods: Problems and prospects in Harare, Zimbabwe

This paper attempts to demonstrate the dynamics of the solid waste management in Harare amid the growing problem of waste generation in the city. It is pinned on the concept of the throw-away as put across by Alvin Toffler in his semianal of the 1970 entitled ‘Future Shock’. Evidence in Harare shows that, indeed, this is now a lived reality. To deal with the problem, there are a number of solution suggested which include embracing it as a fact but creating livelihoods through solid waste management.
