Energy Consumption Estimation in Clustered Wireless Sensor Networks Using M/M/1 Queuing ModelKeywords: Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) , Clustered Network , Ambient Network , Energy Consumption Model , M/M/1 Queuing Model. Abstract: Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), consists of a largenumber of sensor nodes. Each sensor node sensesenvironmental phenomenon and sends the sensed datato a sink node. Since the sensor nodes are poweredby limited power batteries. Energy efficiency is amajor challenge in WSN applications. In this paper, wepropose an analytical model for energy consumptionestimation in clustered WSNs using M/M/1 queuingmodel. The model can be used to investigate the network performance in terms of average energyconsumption. We also propose a power minimization scheme to reduce energy consumption of sensornodes by reducing the number of transitions betweenthe idle and active states of sensor nodes accordingto the number of data packets in the queue. Our analytical model, based on the main parameters such asthe average energy consumption and the number of packets (jobs), significantly reduces energyconsumption. Simulation, support the validity of the proposed approach.
