Abstract:

Aim: The aim of this study was to present pathologic and clinical data and to evaluate distribution of intranasal masses in our clinic. Material and Method: The study was carried out by retrospective analysis of medical records of patients whom incisional or excisional biopsies were taken between 2005 and 2010 in Ear-Nose-Throat Department of University. Results: The data of total 266 patients whose mean age was 42.2 year were examined. There were 139 (52.3%) bilateral and 127 (47.7%) unilateral intranasal masses among the patients. The biopsy sites were nasal cavity in 202(75.9%) patients and sinus, concha and septum in the rest of patients. Histopathological diagnosis were malignant tumors in 5 (1.9%), benign tumors in 31 (11.7%) and non-neoplastic lesions in 230 (86.5%) patients. The disease was unilateral in 88.9% (32/36) of patients whose biopsy results were reported as neoplasm. Nasal obstruction, headache and epistaxis were found as the most common presenting symptoms respectively. Discussion: Among the intranasal masses non-neoplastic lesions are the most common encountered. Nasal polyp is the most commonly seen lesion among the non-neoplastic lesions. In patients who have unilateral intranasal mass biopsy for differential diagnosis prior to certain surgical management should be done.
