Abstract:

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is usedfor various hematologic malignancies seen in childrenand adults. There may be several complications before, during, and after the HSCT. Just one of them is endocrinologiccomplications, since endocrine system (particularlythe pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, andgonads) is highly sensitive against various stress. Chemotherapyand/or total body irradiation used as preparativeregimens and immunosuppressive agents (especiallycorticosteroids) used for the graft-versus-host diseasecan cause hormonal disorders. Time elapsed after theHSCT, transplantation type (autologous or allogeneic),preparative regimen choice, age, and gender determinesthe complications. A multidisciplinary management containinga specialist of endocrinology for these patients ispreferred. In this report, we reviewed the endocrinologiccomplications that observed after the HSCT in childrenand adults referring to the recent literatures. J Clin ExpInvest 2012; 3(1): 149-156
