Recent advances in understanding the relations between liver cirrhosis and sleep disordersKeywords: liver cirrhosis , sleep disorders , electroencephalogram Abstract: Liver cirrhosis patients frequently experience sleep disorders, and the latest research findings have indicated that the presence of sleep disorders may be correlated with poor prognosis in this patient population. In this review, the specific cirrhosis complications, including hepatic encephalopathy-decompensated cirrhosis and hepatopulmonary syndrome, as well as the etiologic factors of cirrhosis, including primary biliary cirrhosis, hepatitis C virus infection, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and Wilson's disease, associated with sleep disorders are discussed. Findings from animal and clinical studies, such as those using dominant frequency analysis by electroencephalography to detect brain dysfunction under specific conditions and molecular analyses that have provided insights into the mechanisms related to gas exchange mechanisms, are detailed along with results of promising drug treatments.
