In this review, we summarize the recent research about DMand itsmajor complications and treatment.In Brazil, there is nodata on the number of the diabetic patients affected by the chronic complications ofDM, but itis known that the prevalence ofchronic complications is high. Probably, thedifferent ethnic groups(genetic factors)encountered in this country, as well as cultural diversity, lifestyle and type of feed become aggravating factors forthe attainment of consistent data on the incidence of the chronic complications in diabetic patients. Moreover, onlya small fraction of the populationof diabetic patients is evaluatedregularlyfor the presence ofcomplicationsin theearly stages of the pathology and receives appropriate treatment. Therefore, this review shows the DM-associatedcomplications and how the control of these complications can improve the quality of lifeof the diabeticpatientscarriers as well as keep them active in the society.
