LEGAL CASES ON GANGA POLLUTION AND JUDICIAL ACTIVISMKeywords: Ganga river , pollution , environmental protection , public interest litigation Abstract: Environmental protection and conservation are major issues all over the world. Main causes of environmental deterioration are urbanization, industrialization, population explosion, disruption of natural ecological balances, over-exploitation of resources, and destruction of a multitude of animal and plant species for economic reasons. The problem of environmental pollution has acquired international dimension and India is no exception to it. There is need for the effective enforcement of the Constitutional mandate and other environmental legislations to protect and conserve the environment. It has been observed that Supreme Court of India has been actively engaged in the protection of environment and many Public Interest Litigations have been instituted against many industries for failing to provide adequate pollution control. In the present paper, an attempt has been made to briefly outline the Supreme Court cases against Ganga pollution.
