Clinicopatholological correlation of thyroid nodulesKeywords: FNAC-Fine needle aspiration cytology , TFT-Thyroid function tests , USG-Ultrasonography , FN-Follicular neoplasm Abstract: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the accuracy of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in diagnosis of thyroid nodules in comparison with other diagnostic modalities and to make early and accurate differentiation of benign and malignant thyroid nodules with special focus on incidence of malignancy in thyroid nodules. FNAC was done in 150 patients who presented with thyroid nodules. Cytology findings were correlated with clinical and radiological diagnosis, Thyroid function tests (TFT) including serologic findings and Histology diagnosis. Incidence of malignancy in thyroid nodules was 6.75%. Sensitivity and specificity in our study was 90% and 100%, respectively with PPV, NPV and diagnostic accuracy of 100%, 90% and 87.5%, respectively. FNAC is a gold standard for preoperative assessment of thyroid nodules. Early and accurate diagnosis reduces surgical intervention, morbidity and mortality.
