The Framingham Study and other researching have been demonstrating the relationship between sedentarism, smoking, gender, aging, diabetes mellitus, overweight/obesity, and hypertension in the pathogenesis of the atherothrombotic events and cardiovascular mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate and characterize the cardiovascular risk factors among a population living in the Middle Araguaia river region, Legal Amazon, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. Among the sample (n=100), the most relevant modifyied risk factors were sedentarism (71%), overweight (33%), hypercholesterolemia (28%), obesity (19%), hypertrygliceridemia (18%), and smoking (11%). Familial predisposition to cardiovascular diseases account for 54% of the sample, representing the major non-modifyied cardiovascular risk factor. The most frequent association occurred between sedentarism and overweight/obesity which means that health authorities should implement strategies to improve lifestyle changing habits, such as better dietary choices, stop smoking, and regular practice of physical activity, exercise and sports recreation which is necessary to abrogate obesity epidemics and its consequences.
