Abstract:

The purpose of the study is to find out how consistent the college leadership is in relation to some of the values and practices of the good leadership as encapsulated in the Gross National Happiness domain of Good Governance. It is essentially a small scale survey research. Sherubtse College houses some of the experienced academics who come not only from Bhutan but also from India and elsewhere. The college also has some of the brightest students of the country. The assumption is that if the faculty, staff, and student leaders of an institution such as Sherubtse College are satisfied with the leadership qualities and practices, a significant section of elite population of the country is governed well. A 5 point Likert Scale questionnaire, administered to faculty members, administrative sta, and student leaders, is analysed using SPSS, which reveals similarities and dierences in their observations of various elements of leadership values and practices. While the college management seems to fare well in providing leadership roles as evidenced by higher percentile rating on Agree and Strongly Agree scales on the degree of agreement, there are some critical responses against few aspects. It appears that the differences of opinions are not only influenced by the positions of the respondents but also by their nationality: Expatriates and Bhutanese. The research also finds that the participants’ view about the values and practices in the college leadership appears to be determined by their subtle personal desires and wants.
