Anxiety and Depression among diabetic patients in Bandarabbas, Southern Iran

Anxiety and depression are more common among diabeticpatients than general population and can impact ontreatment. The aim of this study is to screen a randomselection of diabetic patients attending the diabetes clinic ofShahid Mohammadi hospital, Iran for anxiety and depression.100 patients were surveyed using a valid and reliable measurefor anxiety and depression. Data analyzed using SPSS 13software. Prevalence of depression and anxiety was 50 and 67percent respectively. Both depression and anxiety was morecommon among female patients, those with type 2 diabetesand those had at least one complication of diabetes. Wereport a very high prevalence of anxiety and depression inthese patients. Routine assessment and treatment for anxietyand depression is indicated. Further research on the reasonfor the high incidence of depression in this patient group iswarranted.
