Preparation of Purified Dye Powder from the Bark of Livistona speciosaKeywords: Adsorbent , Dye powder , Livistona speciosa. Abstract: Khor is the plant in Palm family. Its scientific name is Livistona speciosa. The local people from theNorthern East of Thailand use it as the raw material to prepare dye. In this work the dye was extractedfrom the bark of Livistona speciosa by using 4 solvents in extraction such as water, methanol, 3%acetic acid and 0.5 M sodium hydroxide solution. Then those dyes were purified by adsorption on 3adsorbents such as a marly limestone, silica gel and bentonite clay. Finally, the dye on each adsorbentwas removed by dissolved in water, filtered through to filter paper out, and evaporated to dry dyepowder. The efficiencies of adsorption on cotton fiber of those dyes were also studied. The resultsshowed that the extracted dye solution from 4 solvents had different colors, and the dye could bepurified by 3 adsorbents. The methanol solution was the best solvent for extracted dye which waspurified by bentonite clay, gaven the highest percentage yield of purified dye as pale green brown colorpowder approximately about 46.87%. The efficiency of dye adsorption on cotton fiber which wasextracted by methanol and purified by silica showed the highest %E at 88.76 %.
