Les Catholiques à Constantinople. Galata et les églises de rite latin au xviie siècle Catholics in Constantinople: Galata and Latin-Rite Churches of the 17th Century

Cet article propose quelques éléments de réflexion sur la présence catholique à Galata, faubourg de Constantinople, au xviie siècle. En prenant appui sur les relations des missionnaires catholiques ainsi que sur des documents ottomans (conservés dans les archives de l’église Saints Pierre et Paul à Istanbul), cette étude examine le statut juridique de ces catholiques, leur répartition dans l’espace urbain ainsi que les moyens auxquels ils avaient recours pour manifester leur identité. This article suggests some elements for reflection on the catholic presence in the 17th century Galata, suburb of Constantinople. On the base of the accounts of the catholic missionaries and some Ottoman documents (kept in the archives of Saint Peter and Paul’s church in Istanbul), this study examines the legal status of these Catholics, their distribution in the urban space as well as the means they used to expressing their identity.
