Effect of Duty Cycle on Energy Consumption in Wireless Sensor NetworksKeywords: Wireless sensor network , Sensor nodes , Battery lifetime , Energy efficiency , Power management strategies , Low power listening , Node density , Lifetime prediction Abstract: Most studies define a common duty cycle value throughout the wireless sensor networks (WSNs) toachieve synchronization among the nodes. On the other hand, a few studies proposed adaptation of theduty cycle according to uniform traffic conditions to decrease the energy consumption and latency. Inthis paper, the lifetime of the nodes based on overall energy consumption are estimated and the effect ofduty cycle on expected energy consumption is studied. The proposed scheme is compared with a standardscheme and is shown to perform significantly better for sufficient node density.
