The care of chronic patients: The challenge of the new century (La asistencia de pacientes crónicos: El desafío del nuevo siglo)

Background: The chronic disease in children has been increasing.The health care practices for acute diseases have become inefficientand ineffective for assistance of chronic diseases.General Objective: To assess whether Home Care ProgramChildren’s Hospital Dr. Humberto Notti of the province of Mendoza,Argentina, it fits the model of patient-centered care proposed bythe WHO for assistance to chronic patients.Specific Objectives: To Analyze the current manual of functionsof the program and to identify ethical fundaments in the proposedHome Care Program and to compare the ethical basis of WHO′spatient-centered care.Methods: A Qualitative study was conducted: It contents an analysisof the operating manual of the home care program and classificationof content using ethical foundations as units of analysis(Quality of Care, Health, Responsibility, Human Dignity and Justice).Based on the results it was assessed if it fits the model ofpatient-centered care proposed by the WHO.Conclusion: The Home Care Program Children’s Hospital Dr.Humberto Notti is a model of patient-centered care that promotesthe empowerment of health, meets the quality standards of care, andconsiders health as a fundamental value of respect for the dignity ofthe sick patient and his family. Each involved is responsible in a fair way and lowering costs of care for chronic patients. -RESUMEN: Introducción: La patología crónica infantil ha ido en creciente aumento.Las prácticas asistenciales para enfermedades agudas se hantornado ineficientes e ineficaces para la asistencia de enfermedadescrónicas.Objetivo General: Evaluar si el Programa de Internación Domiciliariadel Hospital pediátrico Dr. Humberto Notti de la provinciade Mendoza, Argentina, se encuadra en el modelo de atencióncentrada en el paciente propuesto por la OMS para la asistencia apacientes crónicos.Objetivos Específicos: Analizar el manual actual de funciones dedicho Programa e Identificar fundamentos éticos en el programa deatención domiciliaria propuesto y compararlos con los fundamentoséticos de la atención centrada en el paciente de la OMS.Material y Métodos: Se realizó estudio cualitativo: análisis decontenidos del Manual de Funciones del Programa de InternaciónDomiciliaria y clasificación de los contenidos utilizando fundamentoséticos como unidades de análisis (Calidad de la atención, Salud,Responsabilidad, Dignidad Humana y Justicia).
