Abstract:

At the beginning of May 1945 almost 250.000 refugees from the eastern parts of Germany were in Denmark, having been evacuated into the occupied kingdom. From the arrival of the first refugee in February until the German capitulation in Denmark on May 5, 1945, 6.580 refugees lost their lives. Among them were more than 4.000 children who mostly died of malnutrition and pneumonia.This article examines the reasons behind this death toll and sheds light on the negotiations pertaining to medical help for the refugees between the Danish administration and the German authorities. However, due to egoistical and political considerations both on the German and Danish sides, an agreement was never settled upon.
