Spanish influence in the lexicon of Trinidadian English CreoleKeywords: Trinidad and Tobago , Creole languages , Spanish language , linguistics Abstract: [First paragraph] This paper investigates the influence of Spanish on the lexicon of Trinidadian English Creole (TEC), within a socio-historical context, and the socio-cultural factors which have influenced the retention or disappearance of words in particular domains. A list of all TEC words of known (and some of suspected) Spanish derivation is included, enabling discussion of this case as a particular illustration of general principles of linguistic borrowing.
