Congregate and control: the peasantry and labor coercion in Puerto Rico before the age of sugar, 1750-1820

Discussion of Puerto Rican rural relations in general, and on slavery in particular. The author argues that the island's claim to uniqueness among slave societies does not lie in its scant use of slave labour in the export sector, but in the delicate coexistence of two incompatible models of labour extraction.
