Pharmacotherapy is commonly given to patientsrecovering from a stroke to prevent further complications(e.g. recurrent stroke, seizures) or enhance recovery.However, some drugs may have a negative impact onneuroplasticity. This review examines currently useddrugs that are believed to promote recovery from motorand cognitive disturbances associated with stroke. Thedata on pharmacotherapy are insufficient to supporta claim of significantly improved rehabilitation outcomes.Moreover, a growing body of evidence indicates thatsome agents can impair functional reorganization andslow the recovery process. However, a few chemicals arereported to be beneficial for stroke rehabilitation. Themost promising are noradrenergic and dopaminergicagents, as well as several growth factors; these should bethe future focus of extensive randomized clinical trials.
