Prevalence of Sarcocystis spp. in rodents in Peninsular Malaysia

The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence ofSarcocystis infection in wild and peri-urban rodents insome states in Peninsular Malaysia. The thigh musclefrom these rodents were formalin preserved, sectionedand stained with hematoxylin and eosin and examinedunder light microscopy. Of the 146 muscle tissueexamined only 73 were positive for Sarcocystis infection.Morphological identification showed the presence ofsome new morphological types to be present. Differentspecies of Sarcocystis were seen in the sections but moreextensive studies are needed to identify them to specieslevel.
