Abstract:

Evidences suggest that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) exert control over the symptoms of Bipolar Disorder (BD), acting upon social functioning and reducing the risk of relapse. This paper aims to present the latest findings concerning the applications and effectiveness of CBT in the treatment of BD. Method: in the indexed databases PubMed, Science Direct and BVSPsi, books and articles on the subject, published between January 1999 to October 2009, were researched. Results: Techniques with specific adaptations of CBT for the disorder were found, associated with psychoeducation. Conclusion: The CBT has been feasible and well tolerated by patients, and the improvement in psychosocial functioning of participants is remarkable. Techniques that stimulate the breakdown of dysfunctional thoughts enable the patients to become more independent and active regarding their own disorder and treatment.
