The article critically analyses the concept of "totalitarianism" as applied to communist and fascist regimes. While rejecting, out of theoretical and empirical considerations, the concept in its hard (orthodox) and soft ("ideal-typical") versions, the author proposes to rescue the heuristic potential of the concept by adapting it in a neokantian fashion and differentiating its use in relation to fascist and communist regimes.
